On the Move: Move It…Learn It…Have Fun with School Readiness Skills $40.00

Movement, health, eating, and school readiness skills are key ingredients for children’s futures. This session will focus on the research and activities that directly relate to movement, social behavior, music, and actively engaging children and staff in activity. Attendees will be able to participate in the activities that have been linked to school readiness. The presentation will feature music and movement activities that can be replicated to promote brain development and pro-social behavior all while moving as a health benefit. The overall presentation will feature power point information (available to all attendees); ideas for action; and activities for all. Participants will have an opportunity to laugh, learn, and share while being reminded of the necessity of physical activity, including spontaneous movement and free play, for young learners. Participants will also receive information about music, meaningful movement and brain development. Get healthy active ideas for staff and children. Moving can be fun.

JoAnne Owens-Nauslar has spent forty years promoting the benefits of healthy active living and is considered one of the nation’s most vocal personalities on issues of physical activity, physical education, and the need to “move to improve.” Dr. Jo has taught at the elementary, middle school, high school and collegiate levels of education and was the State Director for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education at the Nebraska Department of Education (19 years); Director of Professional Development for the American School Health Association for (9 years) and 6 years ago joined corporate America. She has served in numerous consultant roles for physical activity planning for state health and education departments and continues to travel to Washington, DC as an advocate for legislative initiatives with a focus on physical activity, physical education, and movement. JoAnne serves as Director of Corporate/Community Development at GeoMotion Group, Inc., a Florida based company. Dr. Jo will help spearhead an initiative “Get Moving America.” As a Physical Activity Consultant to Head Start Body Start, National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor Play, and a contributor to the National Physical Activity Plan, Jo is speaking at head start centers and early childhood conferences in a effort to help policy makers and stake holders understand that we must have a healthy and more active America and the children are 30% of the population and 100% of the future. Dr. Jo believes we must “move to improve.
NDA Division Session: 8-12 AM
“Dancing from the HEART of the country” $40.00
Attendees will be introduced to the exciting fast paced style of swing taught in western Kansas. This style of swing can be taught from K-12 through the University level. Sessions purpose will be focused on the fun of movement. Skills taught will include the basic swing step, turns, continuous turns, table top, dream, and the window. NDA national standards 1, 2 along with NASPE national standards 1: Motor skills and movement patterns, 4: Health enhancing level of physical fitness, and 5: Respectful personal/social behaviors are reflected in this presentation.
Kelly Cook, AAHPERD Central District Past President
Kelly has over 16 years of experience as a teacher. Kelly has coached high school cross country, track and field, and tennis. Kelly has experience in outdoor education as he managed two Challenge courses. Cook has a lifelong fascination with active healthy lifestyles and encourages positive changes to individual’s allowing them to enjoy their time more through movement. In addition to consulting, coaching, and teaching, Cook speaks to public groups, school boards, and leaders of his community. Kelly began his career in 1996, where he served as a faculty member at Seward County Community College located in Liberal, Kansas. He joined the southwest district in 1998 as a member of the faculty at Clovis Community College. Cook resides in Liberal, Kansas.
NASPE Division Session: 8-12 AM
“Awesome Activities/Amazing Ideas” $40.00
Participants will watch Elaine’s 4th grade students move through many activities. It will be a fast paced session in order to cover large group games, fitness/ nutrition, dance/ rhythm, cooperative games and much more. Come prepared to learn. Preschool – high school will walk away with new ideas. Some movement may be required so wear comfortable clothes and join the fun. This session will give you new ideas to share with your students. The session meets the following standard: Students demonstrate skills and apply concepts to perform a variety of physical activities. Don’t miss this session!
Elaine Rosquist
Elaine Rosquist has taught physical education for 27 years and has experience at grade levels k-12. She holds a National Certification in Early and Middle Childhood Physical Education, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education K-12 and a Master of Art Degree in Administrative Leadership and Policy Studies. She is a member of the COAHPERD board and is the NASPE Division Chair. She is currently teaching at Fireside Elementary School in Louisville, Colorado which is part of the Boulder Valley School District and lives in Loveland. Elaine is also the newly selected 2010 COAHPERD Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year.
NASPE Division Session: 1-5 PM
“Educational Gymnastics (K-5) with a focus on the teaching/learning process” $40.00
This workshop will focus on the educational approach to teaching gymnastics to young children. Rudolph Laban’s movement framework of body, space, effort, and relationships will be applied to gymnastics content. A thematic approach will be utilized for organizing and developing content for instruction. Some major goals of this workshop are to: 1) expand your role as teacher; 2) assist you with developing appropriate tasks for your students that encourage and promote versatility; 3) refine skills in isolation to enhance skill development; 4) and to demonstrate a clear progression from simple to more complex content using a skill theme approach.
Chet Bunting
Chet is currently teaching Elementary Physical Education at Riverdale Elementary in Adams 12 School District. He has taught Physical Education for 35 years and has coached gymnastics at all levels. Chet owned and operated a private gymnastics school in West Virginia. He has published articles on inline skating for NASPE in 2001 with revised editions due out this summer. He has presented over 35 local, state, regional, and national presentations. Chet has been a cooperating teacher for 17 preservice teachers from 1978 – present. He has served as president of COAHPERD in 1999. Chet was awarded outstanding Elementary Physical Educator by CAHPERD in 1995. He was named Teacher of the Year by Central District in 1996 and was a National Teacher of the Year finalist in 1997 by NASPE. He is a lifelong learner and has always been fascinated by the teaching process. Chet has a true dedication to each of his students and serves as a positive role model for each of those students.

Unpacking the Colorado Physical Education Standards Free to the first 50 participants. Lunch and substitute will also be paid for by CDE. You will be contacted by Terry Jones at CDE after you are registered for this session.
This workshop provides the link between the articulation and understanding of Colorado Physical Education Content Standards and their practical application in the form of lesson plans and classroom activities. This workshop will provide you with the necessary knowledge and tools that will allow you to return to your school/district and begin the implementation of standards based instruction. In this session, we'll explore practical ways to "unpack" the content standards in order to focus teaching around important ideas contained in the standards. A variety of practical strategies and tools will be examined. The mission of this workshop is to provide educators the necessary tools so that they can improve academic achievement through research-based instruction aligned to the Colorado State Physical Education standards.
Note: Participants should bring copies of their district content standards and dress appropriately for activity.
Sue Brittenham, Ed.D.
Dr. Sue Brittenham recently retired from the Boulder Valley Public School District in Boulder, Colorado. She taught elementary physical education for 30 years and was the District Physical Education Coordinator for 10 years. Currently she works part-time for the Colorado Department of Education providing professional development opportunities for physical educators. She also works part-time for Focused Fitness and assists in helping districts develop curriculum. Sue received her doctoral degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Pedagogy and a minor in Applied Statistics and Research Methods from the University of Northern Colorado in 2002. She is National Board Certified (2004) and was the Colorado Elementary Physical EducationTeacher of the Year in 2005 and the Central District Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2006.
Jo Dixon
Jonette (Jo) Dixon has taught Physical Education for 12 years at both the Middle School and High School levels. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education with a minor and certification in Health Education, as well as a Master’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis in Physical Education Pedagogy all from the University of Central Missouri. She was the 2004 Missouri Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, and the 2005 Central District Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. She has presented at numerous conferences and currently teaches in the Thompson Valley School District in Loveland, CO at Erwin Middle School. She is also a Physical Education Secondary Trainer for the new PE Standards for the state of CO.

Move It-Meaningful Movement, Music, Math, Brain Development & School Success $40.00
Presenter: Joanne Owens-Nauslar, Ed.D; FASHA, FNAS, LBWA
This session is action packed and fun filled. The presentation is a combination of lecture, demonstration, and group participation.
Participants will experience: a “method-a-minute” activities and ideas to enhance children’s movement as well as ideas for teaching and modeling pro-social skills, all while participating in activities. Participants will also be reminded of the research and information about meaningful movement, brain development, and developmentally appropriate physical activities combined with instruction. Have the opportunity for Fun, Laughter, Learning, Sharing, and Moving. Capture ideas for teaching rules and social behavior skills all through movement and music from “Dalmatian Disco” to “I Can Count to 9”.
