COAHPERD Awards and Guidelines

All nomination materials must be submitted to COAHPERD by May 5th, 2010.

Award applicants who meet the requirements and exemplify the criteria for the COAHPERD awards may apply or be nominated by a colleague or individual.

Award winners and nominees will be notified by a member of the COAHPERD Awards Committee once a selection has been made. Further details will be provided to you upon request or selection. The award winners will be presented their awards at the COAHPERD convention.

COAHPERD Joy of Effort Award (NASPE Division)
- Awarded to individuals who, by performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of physical education and sport is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication.

Criteria of Candidates
The nominee must have shown accomplishment in one or more of the following areas:
• Successful career (20 years) in an educational sport setting
• Involvement in state, regional, and/or national professional associations.
• Educational contributions of state wide significance through the medium of sport
• Scholarly activities such as professional presentations and contributions to research and/or service journals.
• Overall leadership to the field.
• Social and humanitarian concerns clearly evident.

COAHPERD Pathfinder Award (NAGWS Division)
- Awarded to a female who has championed for girls and women in sports. This could be a coach, an official, a participant of any combination of the above.

Criteria of Candidates
• Must be someone who has made a significant contribution to girls and women in sport in his/her state as determined by state leaders.

COAHPERD Future Professional / Major Award (Research Consortium Division)
- Awarded to an outstanding individual majoring in health, physical education, recreation, dance and/or professionally related field who has displayed leadership, scholarship, and service during his/her undergraduate professional preparation.

Criteria of Candidates
• Student should be on track towards a degree in one of the following:
o Physical Education
o Kinesiology
o Sport Management
o Exercise Science
o Fitness/Wellness
o Athletic Training
o Or a closely related area.
• Please note that Health, Dance, and Recreation majors are recognized by other associations in the Alliance
• Junior or Senior standing
• GPA of 3.0 or higher, on a 4.0 scale
• Service to school or community (3-5 contributions) for a minimum of two years during undergraduate career.

This form must be completed by an advisor/nominator. Students cannot nominate themselves for this award.
Faculty/advisors may nominate one student per major per college/university.

COAHPERD Graduate Student Research Award (Research Consortium Division)
- Awarded to a graduate student for conducting outstanding research within health, physical education, recreation, or dance disciplines.

Criteria of Candidates
• The primary selection criteria shall be the significance of the contribution, as well as the presentation of the abstract.
o Specifically, the following criteria will be assessed:
 significance of the topic
 design and methods
 data analysis
 3 potential contribution of results
 discussion
 writing clarity
 strength of advisor’s letter.

COAHPERD Honor Award
- Award recognizes and honors exemplary, dedication to the profession. It is awarded to an individual who has significantly contributed to the COAHPERD organization through time and talents.

Criteria of Candidates
• Activity in the fields of health, physical education, recreation or dance for at least ten years.
• Indication of leadership or meritorious service in five or more of the following ways:
o Leadership
 A member of the COAHPERD Executive Board (past or present).
 An active member of other professional organizations (for example, Central District AHPERD, and/or an association of AAHPERD.
 Participated actively in committee work over a period of three or more years with local or state organizations, either COAHPERD or with an organization promoting the same general objectives as COAHPERD.
o Writing, Research
 Provide systematic research which has helped the profession.
 Author or co-author of articles in professional literature.
 Author of articles for handbook, newspapers, magazines, and/or books.
o Speaking, Teaching, Coaching, Performing, Supervising, Directing
 Significant addresses before educational groups, conventions, assemblies, luncheon meetings, radio or TV presentations and other such meetings held in the interest and promotion of health, physical education, recreation and dance.
 Recognized for outstanding school or college teaching and/or administrative leadership ability and success.
 Outstanding contribution to HPERD as a program supervisor or director in school systems or community departments of agencies.
 A contribution to the profession by conducting clinics or workshops.
 An outstanding original contribution to the profession which has affected its philosophy or practices.

COAHPERD Scholar Award (Research Consortium Division)
- Awarded to an individual who has made significant contributions through research and advocacy as it effects the enhancement of student learning in physical education in the state of Colorado. This award winner may be eligible for the District Scholar Award at the Central District AHPERD level.

Criteria of Candidates
• The recipient shall be an individual who has demonstrated significant contributions to physical education through research for an extended period of time with a minimum of 5 years in the field. This will usually consist of extensive service that has significantly impacted the Research Consortium.

COAHPERD Young Professional Award (NASPE Division)
- Awarded to a younger COAHPERD member who has demonstrated outstanding potential in teaching, scholarships, and service. The recipient shall have demonstrated a quality of performance that, if continued, indicates that he/she will develop into a distinguished member of the profession.

Criteria of Candidates
• Has no more than 5 years experience in the field.
• Has demonstrated excellent potential in the area of teaching, research, coaching, leadership, performance, clinics and/or administration which are consistent with the promotion of the Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance professions.

COAHPERD Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award (AAPAR)
- Award provides recognition to individuals who have demonstrated continuous dedication to the advocacy and enhancement of students with special needs learning in physical education in the state of Colorado. These nominees, by outstanding teacher performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of students with special needs in physical education is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication.

For the purposes of this award, an adapted physical educator is defined as an individual assigned at least 50% of his/her teaching responsibility in adapted physical education, providing direct and/or consultative services to individuals with disabilities ages birth to adult. Applicants may have responsibility for teaching general physical education, but applications can be submitted only for the adapted physical education part of the teaching assignment.

Criteria of Candidates
• Certification as a physical education teacher
• Certified in Certified Adapted Physical Education (CAPE) or be eligible to sit for the Certified Adapted Physical Education exam (eligibility=200 hrs. of practicum experience, at least one 3-credit hour survey course in APE) is desirable
• Minimum of five years teaching experience in physical education
• Full-time teaching contract, current at the time of nomination
• Minimum of 50% of total teaching responsibility is teaching adapted physical education classes, providing direct and/or consultative services
• Conducts an appropriate physical education program as reflected in the students’ IEP and generally accepted standards of practice for adapted physical education
• Utilizes various teaching methodologies and plans innovative learning experiences to meet the needs of all students;
• Serves as a positive role model epitomizing personal health and fitness, enjoyment of activity, sportsmanship, and sensitivity to the needs of students;
• Participates in professional development opportunities;
• Provides service to individuals with disabilities through advocacy, consultation, in-service training presentations and/or active membership in related professional organizations

COAHPERD K-12 Dance Educator of the Year Awards (NDA)
- Award recognizes effective teaching methods that inspire grade school students towards a comprehensive appreciation for dance as a performing art and healthy lifestyle. These nominees, by outstanding teacher performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of dance is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication.

For the purpose of this award, a dance educator is defined as: 1) an individual who is employed full time at school, and 2) 50% or more of the dance educator's time is devoted to teaching dance. No aerobic dance will be adjudicated.

Criteria of Candidates
The candidate must be a dance teacher with a minimum of three years teaching experience.
The teacher must show evidence of effective teaching in the following ways:
• Teaching creatively and utilizing various methodologies.
• Presenting a balanced and sequential curriculum based on the developmental, social and psychological needs of the students.
• Emphasizing the significance of dance as an integral cultural component that enables students to understand their own cultural heritage as well as that of others.
• Promoting an understanding of dance as a creative art through the discussion of aesthetics of students' own works and/or the works of others.
• Encouraging an appreciation of dance as a performing art through viewing live and/or filmed works by professional dance companies.
• Providing opportunities for students to share their creative work with appropriate audiences.
• Serving as a positive role model for students.
• Showing professional commitment through membership and active participation in local, state and/or national dance organizations.

COAHPERD College/University Dance Educator of the Year Awards (NDA)
- Award recognizes effective teaching methods that inspire college students towards a comprehensive appreciation for dance as a performing art and healthy lifestyle. These nominees, by outstanding teacher performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of dance is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication.

For the purposes of this award, a dance educator is defined as: 1) An individual who has a full-time appointment at a college or university, and 2) One whose primary responsibilities are in the field of dance, which include teaching and/or administration.

Criteria of Candidates
• Must be a dance educator with a minimum of 6 years teaching experience, with academic rank at a college/university. The educator must show evidence of effective teaching in the following:
• Teach creatively with current methodology and knowledge.
• Emphasize the significance of dance as an integral component for students to understand their own cultural heritage as well as that of others.
• Promote an understanding of dance as a creative art through the discussion of aesthetics of students' own works or the works of others.
• Encourage a comprehensive appreciation for dance as a performing art, engaging in live or filmed performances and works.
• Apply the National Dance Standards in the dance curriculum.
• Serve as a positive role model for students and as a dance professional.

COAHPERD Health Education Professional of the Year Awards (AAHE Division)
- Awarded to an outstanding teacher of health education at the K-12 level.
- Awarded to an outstanding college or university health professional.

Awards are given in two categories:
• Public Schools (K-12)
• College/University

Criteria of Candidates
• Candidates must have five years of experience in the category in which they are applying for.
• Nominees must be practitioners.
• Leadership in developing and implementing or directing/coordinating effective health education/promotion programs.
• Volunteer service to local, state, district or national level organizations.
• Service to local, state or national professional organizations.
• Evidence of meritorious professional activity in research, innovative teaching, presentations or publications.

COAHPERD Physical Education Teacher of the Year Awards (NASPE)
- The Physical Education Teacher of the Year Awards provides recognition to individuals who have demonstrated continuous dedication to the advocacy and enhancement of student learning in physical education in the state of Colorado. These nominees, by outstanding teacher performance and style, have personified the concept that the effort made to enrich the goals and objectives of physical education is a labor of love, inspired by commitment and dedication.

Awards are given in four categories:
• Elementary - Kindergarten through Fifth Grade (NASPE Division)
• Middle School - Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade (NASPE Division)
• High School - Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade (NASPE Division)
• College or University - Undergraduate or Graduate Instructors (Research Consortium Division)

Teachers may have responsibility for teaching grades that cross the different levels, but applications can be submitted for one level only. Teachers should apply for the level which represents 50% or more of their physical education teaching assignment.

Criteria of Candidates
• Conducts a quality physical education program as reflected in NASPE and CO. state standards and guidelines for K-12 Physical Education programs.
• Utilizes various teaching methodologies and plans innovative learning experiences to meet the needs of all students.
• Serves as a positive role model epitomizing personal health and fitness, enjoyment of activity, sportsmanship, and sensitivity to the needs of students.
• Participates in professional development opportunities.
• Provides service to the profession through leadership, presentations, and/or writing.
• Certification as a physical education teacher
• Minimum of five years teaching experience in physical education
• Full-time teaching contract, current at the time of nomination.

COAHPERD Administrator / Principal of the Year Award (NASPE Division)
- Awarded to a Principal, Assistant Principal, District Physical Education Coordinator, School Board Member, Supervisor or Superintendent who have dedicated themselves to excellence, in service to the mission of NASPE and the development of strong, innovative programs in the field of physical education.

Criteria of Candidates
• Candidates shall have served as a full-time administrator/supervisor of physical education in K-12 for a period of at least 7 years.
• Demonstrate leadership in K-12 physical education at the local, state, district, and/or national level.
• Demonstrate service to the profession through publications, presentations, workshops, in-services, etc.
• Demonstrate advocacy for quality physical education.
• Demonstrate contributions to curriculum development, technology, innovation, staff development, program improvement, or resource development in physical education.

COAHPERD Athletic Director of the Year (NASPE Division)
- Awarded to an outstanding athletic/activities director who through their influence on the lives of young people have made significant contributions to their school and community.

Criteria of Candidates
• An athletic director is defined as an individual who has as their major responsibility, the administration of the interscholastic athletic program for a specific school or school system.
• Candidates shall be athletic administrators who are recognized as an educated leader and who maintains athletics as an integral part of the total educational program.
• Administer an exemplary athletic program making full use of school and community resources and involving as many students as possible.
• Shall have achievements in the following:
o Have made significant contributions within the field of athletic administration at the local, state, and or national levels.
o Made a positive impact on the lives of students.

COAHPERD Sportsmanship Award (NASPE Division)
- Awarded to an outstanding individuals in the sport world who promote the values of sportsmanship, ethical play in sport competition, and community service.

Criteria of Candidates
• Preferably is a current member of AAHPERD/NASPE.
• Display acts of honesty and integrity that go beyond the norm.
• Make decisions that, while difficult or unpopular, are respectful of the game, the opponent, and most of all, attest to the honesty of the individual(s) involved.
• Exemplify class, grace, teamwork, and ethical conduct on and off the field.
• Consistently demonstrate the values of caring, fairness, civility, honesty, integrity, perseverance and determination and responsibility inside and outside the sports/competition setting.
• Have positively affected a community's sport culture and game environment, especially as they relate to parents and coaches.

COAHPERD Distinguished Service Award
- Awarded to an individual, group or organization, which may or may not be members of the Association but who has contributed significantly to fields of health, physical education, recreation or dance.

Criteria of Candidates
• Has made a major contribution to the profession in the development of programs, publicity, public relations, advocacy efforts and/or support for the mission of COAHPERD.
• Consistently provides leadership and support for HPERD goals and activities in the workplace and/or community at large.
• Provides significant contributions in the areas of employee wellness, physical activities, health maintenance, and health.
